How to Replace a LiftMaster, Chamberlain, or Craftsman Logic Board

Replacing a logic board is a simple process if you follow these steps:

  • Confirm the Correct Board: Double-check that you have ordered the right logic board for your specific garage door opener model.
  • Turn Off Power: Unplug the power to the opener or switch off the power at the circuit breaker.
  • Access the Logic Board: Loosen the screws and open the cover of the garage door opener.
  • Take a Photo: Before removing the old board, take a picture of the wiring for future reference.
  • Disconnect the Wires: Use a screwdriver to disconnect all wires, including the wiring harness and antenna cable.
  • Remove the Old Board: Squeeze the plastic tabs at each corner of the board with needle-nose pliers, and pull the board away from the control box.
  • Install the New Board: Position the new board on the tabs and secure it in place.
  • Reconnect Wires: Reattach all wires, the wiring harness, and the antenna cable, using your reference photo for guidance.
  • Restore Power: Plug the opener back in or switch the breaker on to restore power.

You can find the information needed to verify the correct board inside or on the outside of your LiftMaster operator’s cover.

Chain / Belt Repair

Loose Chain / Belt Repair

Is your garage door opener’s drive chain or belt loose or sagging? A common issue with garage door openers is a loose chain or belt, which can cause loud noises as it bangs against the rail or door during operation. This often happens due to normal wear and tear or the weight of the garage door. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and fix a loose garage door chain or belt:

Understanding the Drive Chain or Belt

Most garage door openers use a trolley arm to operate the door, which is powered by either a drive chain or belt. Chain drive models use a sprocket on the opener, while belt drive models rely on pulleys.

Step 1: Disconnect Power for Safety

Before troubleshooting, always prioritize safety. Disconnect the power to the opener to prevent any accidental activation or electrical shock. If you're unsure how to do this, refer to your garage door opener’s manual. Once powered off, disengage the garage door from the opener by using the emergency release cord (usually a red cord).

Step 2: Reconnect Power and Test the Chain or Belt

After disconnecting the door from the opener, reconnect the power and re-engage the garage door chain or belt. The chain or belt should regain tension when the door is fully opened. Test by opening and closing the door to see if the issue is resolved. If the chain or belt is still loose, you may need to tighten it or consider replacing it.

Step 3: How to Tighten a Loose Chain or Belt

A loose chain or belt is usually caused by a loose adjustment nut. To fix this:

  • Inspect the Trolley Assembly: Use a stepladder to safely access the trolley assembly.
  • Find the Adjustment Bolt: On one side of the trolley, there will be an adjustment bolt with two nuts—one for adjusting tension and one for locking it in place. This is usually located where the trolley connects to the garage door rail.
  • Tighten the Nut: Tighten the adjustment nut to increase tension on the chain or belt. Once tightened, hold it in place and then tighten the locking nut.

When to Call a Professional

If the chain or belt remains loose after adjustment or if you’re uncomfortable making the repair, it's time to call a professional. Chains and belts may need replacement, and a qualified garage door technician can safely perform the task.

Garage Door Repair Services

A loose chain or belt can cause more than just noise—it can also damage your door by dragging on the surface and potentially cause the opener to lose its open and close limits. This can make the door unsafe and may lead to more serious damage. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential to keep your garage door operating safely and smoothly.

If you notice these issues, it’s a sign that it’s time to service your garage door system. You can either attempt the DIY fix outlined above or contact a professional to address more complex problems.
